Encounters with Sri Lankan Frogmouths

For a long time I had wanted to see the elusive Sri Lankan Frogmouths. In February 2024, I made some time and started off on a journey into the lush, dense forests of Thattekad with my friend and mentor, accompanied by an experienced local bird guide. Our mission was clear: to encounter and photograph the elusive Sri Lankan Frogmouth.

The forest canopy was thick, letting through only dappled sunlight, creating a magical, albeit challenging, setting for bird photography. We definitely needed our tripods, as the landscape was very challenging to handhold our heavy lenses.

Our patience was first rewarded with a thrilling sight—a solitary Frogmouth quietly hidden amidst dense undergrowth. Spotting this bird required immense patience and keen eyes, but the joy of discovering it nestled quietly in the foliage was special.

Encouraged by our first sighting, we ventured deeper on our second day, guided expertly through the dense trails. Soon enough, we encountered a pair of Frogmouths. This sighting was unique—the female comfortably asleep while the male kept watch, wide-eyed and alert, providing a rare glimpse into their intriguing behavior and partnership.

On our third day, our persistence paid off yet again. We came across another enchanting pair, comfortably perched together on a branch, showcasing a serene togetherness. Observing their calm demeanor, undisturbed by our presence, felt like a privilege.

Our final sighting was perhaps the most heartwarming: a male Frogmouth attentively nesting. It was captivating to see this gentle bird diligently guarding its nest, adding a beautiful conclusion to our series of sightings.

I guess quiet wonders of nature come to us only through patience and respect for wildlife - each Frogmouth sighting was a small triumph, and etched in my memory—and thankfully, in photographs.
